April 2017 Newsletter

Libby greeting one of our guests in the morning.

Happy Easter and blessed Passover!

In this season of almsgiving, forgiveness, renewal and resurrection; our hopes and passions are centered in God as we come together in community to feed those who are hungry and give shelter to those who are experiencing homelessness on our streets of Sacramento.

It is through the grace of God that I have been “blessed” to have been given the opportunity to serve “the least of our brothers and sisters” here at Loaves & Fishes for almost 20 years. This will be my last Appeal Letter to you as I prepare to move on to a new ministry. I plead for your continuous financial help as we search for a new Executive Director. It is so important to maintain the solid continuity of supporters in this time of transition. Please consider making a donation right now.

When I first came to Loaves & Fishes back in 1985, I was just a young Novice with the Sisters of Mercy. I volunteered in the “old” Dining Room off of 12th Street that used to be Tony’s Bar & Grill. Now, it is “Loha’s Garden” where women have a safe and beautiful little patio space outside of Maryhouse. Since then, I have been a part of the “Miracle” of Loaves & Fishes.

In the past 34 years, we have grown to be a 5 acre campus with 14 unique programs:
Advocacy - Homeless to Housing Issues
Anneke’s Haven - Pet Kennel
Dining Room - Daily Hot Meal
Friendship Park - Private Park with Restrooms, Benches, Day Storage, Resources
Genesis Mental Health — Counseling, Outreach and Psychiatric Referrals
Jail Visitation — Downtown County Jail Visits and Support
Library — Books, Newspapers, Internet Accessibly
Maryhouse — Daytime Shelter for Homeless Women and Children
Mercy Clinic — Daily Urgent Medical Care
Mercer Veterinary Clinic - Medical Care for Pets
Mustard Seed School — Private School for Homeless Children
Sister Nora’s Place — Night Shelter for Women with Mental Health Diagnosis
Tommy Clinkenbeard Legal Services — Legal Services & Community Service project
Wash House — Showers & Shave for Men

Sister Libby taking the time to get to know one of our guests

At Loaves & Fishes there are over 80 employees, 40% of whom used to be homeless, 1,000 volunteers serve each month, and an average of 600 men, women and children come to the campus for services any given day!

This “Miracle” of Loaves & Fishes happens each day when a staff member, a volunteer, another guest; touches someone else feeling a little lonely, valueless, unworthy, confused, or afraid. The “Miracle” happens with a simple smile, a gesture of acknowledgement, a real presence of care and passion for the other!

I believe that because we are grounded in our mission, “In an environment of welcome, hospitality, safety and cleanliness we seek to provide an oasis for homeless men, women and children seeking survival service”, that with your help we will continue to be there for others for years to come.

I need your financial support. Now is the time and now is the season!

God bless you,

Sister Libby Fernandez
Executive Director
