SafeGround Sacramento Jubilee
Cesar Chavez Park, Sacramento (10th and J Streets)
Tuesday, July 20, 2010 1 PM to 6 PM
State Senator Darrel Steinberg will speak at 5PM

SafeGround Sacramento members, campers and supporters will gather for a celebration at Cesar Chavez Park. Homeless participants will march from Loaves & Fishes at 1:30 PM to join the Jubilee. There will be music and poetry and speakers from different walks of life who will share what SafeGround means to them and our community. The main program will start at 3:15 PM

It has been a year since Safe Ground’s homeless members attempted to make a place for themselves on a piece of ground that was not being used by anyone else and was not totally hidden far from public view. They were forced to move to another piece of land, similarly unused and in plain sight. Again they were forced to move. They hid from view. They came back to try it again. This time they were arrested for the act of sleeping outdoors. They retreated once again, but this time more organized and more strongly in community. They have grown in numbers and in resolve to meet their goal of finding a piece of land where they can call a SafeGround Sacramento Community of simple cabins or cottages.

The Safe Ground Jubilee will be a time to celebrate the many amazing accomplishments of SafeGround Sacramento over the past year. Also attending will be the friends and allies we have gained since that small group of homeless folks first said “We want Safe Ground!”

Urgent Needs!

Just got word from the Directors at Maryhouse, our day shelter for women and children, that they are completely out of Baby Formula. They've been warning parents that we may not have any formula the next time they come in for some!

We are in desperate need of non-soy baby formula!

Donations can be brought to

All Are Created Equal

Happy Independence Day!

We all know these words, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal...". Most of you can probably complete that sentence in your sleep. It's the foundation of our nations entire political structure. It means that whether you are the CEO of a fortune 500 company or sleeping on a street corner, every man, woman, and child is equal. It means that we all have the same inalienable rights - life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It means that, no matter who you are, you deserve, no, have the right, to pursue life and happiness free from persecution.

At Loaves & Fishes we treat everyone equal. Every man, woman, and child, no matter what race, no matter what age, no matter what background - everyone is treated as a human being should be, with respect, dignity, and compassion. No one is turned away. In fact in the month of June, we served over 15,000 hot healthy meals - that's 400-700 per day!

This fourth of July, when I'm barbecuing and watching the "Rockets Red Glare" or the parade floats go by, I'm going to enjoy myself and my family. And I'm going to offer up a silent prayer because I live somewhere where come Tuesday morning I can come to Loaves & Fishes, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and serve the poor. You can too.
